1147m3 Westergasfabriek

Lea-Nina Fischer

1147m3 Westergasfabriek by Lea-Nina Fischer is an installation work which questions our perception of space and time. What is the scent of the Westergasfabriek? In cooperation with the perfumer, Andreas Wilhelm, Fischer creates an abstract scent which brings forward different facets of the space of the Westergasfabriek. After exploring the site with specific methods, the scent is created in the laboratory of the perfumer. The introduced scent interplays with the physical space, evoking associations and memories within the individual which influence the sensory perception of the space as a whole. The scent is diffused in a very subtle non-visual way in the exhibition space and challenges the audience to ask themselves how scent influences perception, both consciously and unconsciously. While non-visual, the ephemeral, evocative and transportive characteristics of scent are explorable. Can scent create a new approach to the space? How does it influence the space? Fischers work 1147m3 Westergasfabriek offers an olfactory spatial experience!

Artistic Statement

How do we perceive our surroundings, space and time? Through multi-sensory installation work I ask my audience to become participants reflecting upon their comprehension of the subject or space. Working with scent in my recent work, I am interested in the often overlooked impact that odors have on perception, specifically through the memory and associations they trigger within the individual. My work is site-specific, interacts with the place, the subjects and the time itself. After doing research on site which is done through specific methods I go to the laboratory where precise work is needed. In cooperation with a professional perfumer I create a scent especially made for the explored site. The abstract scent aims to bring forward different facets of the space. It is a crucial part of my work to please at the same time as disrupt the audience's habituated perception. The diffused scent on site invites the percipient audience to get a new perspective of the space and time we are living in.
